During the two-year trial, helmets would be optional for adults cycling on separate cycle ways, dual-use paths and roads. Riders 18 years old will still have to wear a helmet.

The call comes after an international cycling expert claimed the number of cyclists in WA would treble if helmets weren’t compulsory.

But Cycling WA CEO Garry Chandler believes the law should stay put, saying that European roads differ greatly from those in WA.
