DJ Bokchoy
The crotchspawn of a chance encounter between Ted DiBiase, a bottle of rum and an oddly shaped potato, DJ Bokchoy has carved out a niche supplying techno to poor people who can’t afford to go to good gigs. Consistently the bridesmaid and never the bride, he has watched chance after chance go by, until finally latching onto the coattails of Minimal X-posure, a local tech gig which, by pure coincidence is also his nickname down at the local primary school.
Beginning a lengthy radio career way back in the heady summer of 1998, when they used milo tins and string to transmit, Bokchoy still enjoys forcing audiences to listen to whatever he chooses to pull out of his magical record bag of doom. He plays a variety of musical styles from tech to electro, electronica to various forms of house and minimal and a whole stack of other genres that he made up. With a style that borrows largely from Wesley Willis and Devastating Dave, he is sure to get your chins a-stroking and your legs a-tapping with his tediously long and drawn out mixes.

Q & A
How did you become involved with the station and your program?
As a late night heavy breather, the guys doing the Powerjam show began to recognise my calls over time and eventually invited me up. I never left.
How long have you been with RTRFM?
I first climbed the stairs in about ’98.
What do you enjoy most about presenting?
The fact that people have to listen to whatever I choose. I have always been a bit of a Stereo Nazi. Now I get to practise my techniques on a much larger scale.
Strangest experience at RTRFM?
Not having to deal with a haunted UWA building anymore. You kinda get used to it after a while, y’know? The new place just doesn’t have the same overtones of evil.
Current favourite release?
I just got back from a tour of Germany. I had to buy a new record bag while I was over there to ship all my new purchases back and you want me to pick one single release to comment on? Are you high?!
Favourite RTRFM program/s?
Soulsides, Difficult Listening, All City.
What do you do in real life?
I have heaps of jobs, each more rewarding and fulfilling than the last – one as a sharemarket software guy, one as a video graphics guy and I also put on a gig or two around town.
