Damian Smith
Damian’s not on air quite as much these days, not since he took a job in Geraldton at the beginning of 2011.
He was banished to the regions for excessive punning, and leaving banana peels on Peter Barr’s chair once too often. (Can somebody please still do this?)
He misses RTR-FM more than he can put into words. Perhaps he should put it into music.
He visits Perth regularly on weekends, which is why you can still hear him every so often on Rockin’ the Roots on a Sunday afternoon.

Stories by this Presenter
Q & A
How did you become involved?
In 2007 I began volunteering around the RTR office and drifted into a radio course at Murdoch Uni. I knew a local drummer who’d filled in on Roots every so often. He mentioned Simon Kelly was looking for new presenters and I took up the opportunity. A day after nervously presenting my first solo show, I received a call from Barr asking me to fill in on Breakfast the next week, and that was that.
How long have you been with RTRFM?
Listening since March 2005, volunteering around the office since December 2007, and presenting since April 2008.
What do you enjoy most about presenting?
The sheer unpredictability of it all. And the perfect and fulfilling confluence of sharing good music and good conversations. Live broadcasts add a performance aspect that I find really enjoyable too.
Strangest experience at RTRFM?
Dealing with necrophilia, pap smears and the Big Bang in the space of one Morning Mag was pretty full-on. Thank goodness that wasn’t the show I had Puppetry of the Penis drop their pants in front of me. Before you ask, it wasn’t weird – not when I had most of the office staff crammed into the studio behind me to watch, whistle and shriek.
Favourite RTRFM programs?
Rockin’ The Roots, Black and Blue, Morning Magazine, Plucked Strings, Breakfast, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Down Underground, Global Rhythm Pot and El Ritmo.
What do you do in real life?
I’m a TV news reporter. Yeah I know – how did that happen? Please join me in scratching your head and adopting a puzzled look.
