Maxi May

Maxi’s love of music and numerous DJ and musician friends inspired her to begin presenting women’s interest stories on BDTH in 2004. Three years later she began presenting Drastic on Plastic. These shows are two of the longest running specialist programs on RTRFM, featuring women in music and presented by women for everyone. Maxi can be heard mixing alternative tunes with her favorites: jazz, disco, funk, soul and house. In her other life Maxi is an exhibiting artist and Postgraduate student researching Art and Popular/Media Culture.

Q & A

How did you become involved with the station and your program?

I used to come in sometimes with Brother B when he did RTR shows. I did a radio course through Murdoch Uni and Fremantle Radio, then spoke to some gal friends and they were looking for people for BDTH. So there I was.

How long have you been with RTRFM?

Since 2004 on the radio, before then helping out now and then.

What do you enjoy most about presenting?

The studio environment. The music. The people I interview and their stories. The interactions with the presenters in the studio before and after show. I sit there bopping to the beat. Oh and all the buttons!

Strangest experience at RTRFM?

Volunteering at Radiothon when RTRFM were in transition from the old premises to the new. There were some strange renovations and interactions happening between presenters and staff – very funny, one of those experiences when you had to be there. A riot!

Favourite RTRFM program/s?

So many…. Definitely Full Frequency (Thursday), Black and Blue, Drastic on Plastic, El Ritmo Latino, Saturday Jazz, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Giant Steps, Morning Mag and Underground Solution.

What do you do in real life?

Artist/Designer and Postgrad. student but mostly procrastinate and shop.
