Q & A

How did you become involved with the station and your program/s?

I’ve listened to RTR for years… especially the jazz shows. Late one night whilst in Rotto with schoolmates (yes it was THAT long ago) I remember hearing some crazy music on RTR’s late night jazz show Round Midnight. I remembered the name of the track (See-Saw by bassist Dave Holland) which really piqued my interest, and started my listening to RTR on a regular basis.

Years later, someone asked a friend of mine if he could think of anyone who might be interested in presenting a modern jazz radio show on RTR. Quick as a flash, Chris Wright (Giant Steps co-ordinator) was on the phone before I had time to come up with a good excuse.

How long have you been with RTRFM?

I think it’s been since about 1998…

What do you enjoy most about presenting?

I really enjoy the luxury of just sitting and listening to music for two hours. That and also playing crazy (but good) stuff that I hope will be new to someone listening… See-Saw still gets a run every now and then.

Strangest experience at RTRFM?

Not sure if it qualifies as ‘strangest’ but this one time… at band camp… Okay, actually it was after a big night… but I remember waking up late, throwing clothes on, grabbing the nearest stack of CDs and high-tailing it to the studio only to realise I was a day early.

Favourite RTRFM program/s?

Giant Steps _(of course), _Saturday Jazz, Global Rhythm Pot, Black and Blue, Soulsides, Jamdown, El Ritmo, Full Frequency and Underground Solution… but I listen to pretty much all of the shows at some point, gotta love the diversity!

What do you do in real life?

I’m a jazz musician… play gigs, write music, teach bass at WAAPA, run projects Explorations and Jazzaziz for JazzWA and perform with my funk band Thrust. I also love to travel and try and do this when and wherever possible.
