Are we Moving Backward in Refugee Policy?

With Wilson Tuckey saying that the coalition would stop sending asylum seekers to onshore processing facilities if elected and Tony Abbott continuing to push for a return to the pacific solution. It would seem that a Coalition victory would most definitely mean a regression to the draconian Howard government immigration policies that saw hundreds of refugees detained for years and many others deported, often to their death or torture.
However the Gillard government are still failing to provide a humane alternative and are instead quite happy to pander to the xenophobic and racist refugee bashing while continuing to promise a so called ‘East Timor Solution’.
To discuss the current political debate, if you could call it that, around refugees and immigration, Indymedia’s Raymond Grenfell spoke to Phil Chilton, from the Refugee Rights Action Network.
