Australian households throw out just over 5 billion dollars worth of food each year, according to a new study by an independent think tank.

That’s more than you spend on digital equipment and flat screen TVs!

In fact, it’s enough to meet the shortfall in the United Nations Emergency Relief Fund.

Throwing out food is not only a waste of money, it’s not great for the environment either – discarded food ends up in landfill, rotting away and releasing methane into the atmosphere.

The Australian Institute is a partner in Do Something’s ‘FoodWise’ campaign, which aims to reduce this high level of waste.

David Baker is the author of the study, and spoke to Travis Collins on Morning Magazine.
