This week Amnesty International began visiting Australia’s Detention Centre facilities, including a visit to the Curtin Detention centre.

Four representatives spent a couple of days inspecting the Kimberly centre North-East of Broome and meeting detainees.

Amnesty Refugee Co-ordinator Graeme Thom says there’s an “air of hopelessness” among asylum seekers, and that mental health’s a major concern.

And the human rights group wants the detention centre closed immediately.
