Early yesterday morning hundreds of Israeli naval commandos stormed six civilian vessels carrying 10 000 tons of humanitarian aid intended for the besieged people of the Gaza Strip.

The raid took place in international waters some 65km off the coast of Gaza.

At least ten people were killed in the raid and dozens wounded.

The Israeli Defence Force has claimed that activists opened fire on the soldiers and that they had no choice but to respond with lethal force.

However, journalists on board one of the ships reported people screaming “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot, we are unarmed civilians”.

Indymedia reporters Alex Whisson and Raymond Grenfell spoke to Palestine solidarity activist and author Antony Loewenstein.
