Folk is the new funk – there is no doubt. It qualifies in the sub-genre crate-digger classification stakes with acid-folk, freak-folk, nu-folk, psych and naturalismo, as well as both wyrd and weird. You may not be quite sure where to begin, but search and you will be rewarded with treasures like this.
The master archivists at Trunk Records describe the fuzzy felt sound thus “The music has to have a childish, sweet sound but at the same time have an old fashioned, spooky edge”. Fuzzy Felt Folk has been added to Trunk’s already impressive catalogue of obscure, particularly British, reissues which include The Clangers, The Tomorrow People and pioneering electronic sounds from members of the BBC Radiophonic Orchestra.
You too will become addicted to this new delightfully cute and delightfully scary sub-genre. Folky treasures on offer include the aptly-titled Folk Guitar, an almost funky instrumental The Troll and the bizarre My Mother Said with its lyrics “My mother said that I never should – play with the gypsy’s in the wood. If I did she would say naughty girl to disobey…” this will send you off looking for the soundtrack to The Wicker Man while you wait for Fuzzy Felt Volume 2.
