The world of console and computer gaming has come on leaps and bounds in the last ten years, the world of sport’s gaming is perhaps one of the benchmark leaders for all different styles of gaming genres. With the inclusion of real players who actually play the sport, some of the world’s leading commentators calling the sports that they are known for calling, and on top of all that a soundtrack boasting some of the music world’s leading artists. Recent years has seen Electronic Arts’ leading the way with their vast array of sporting games out on their EA Sports label. However in recent years Take Two have joined the fray with their 2K sports series of games. Following the same line as EA Sports they are now starting to earn the reputation as being far more realistic especially in when it comes to basketball.
With a lot sport’s games soundtracks now boasting the latest and greatest in commercial music’s finest Take Two have decided to take an alternative step and support some up and coming artists from a variety of different genres. Hip Hop certainly hasn’t fallen foul of the Take Two gaze and they have teamed up with a hip-hop label Stones Throw to create a partnership akin to the LA Laker’s key 3 time championship combo of Kobe and Shaq. Though 2K8: B-Ball Zombie war is not a soundtrack in itself to a particular game several tracks are licensed to appear on 2K8 NFL and NBA 2K8. The album is compiled by Stone’s Throw don Peanut Butter Wolf and sees new tracks from Madlib, Guilty Simpson, Percee P, and Koushik. The album also boasts two exclusive unreleased tracks by late Hip-Hop production maestro J-Dilla with lyrics for the tracks by Talib Kwelli, MF DOOM, and Q-Tip. The album also boasts a whole host of new talents including Karriem Riggins, Madlib’s new group Supreme Team, and Peanut Butter Wolf’s latest addition James Pants.
Even if you aren’t a console gaming fan or even if you are this compilation will not disappoint open minded hip-hop fans the world over. 2K8: B-Ball Zombie War is once again a smooth blend of Stone’s Throw finest delivering the best in up-front hip-hop from the likes of Guilty Simpson, MF DOOM, and recent Perth visitor Percee P to excellent production from some of hip-hop’s finest producers of the moment such as Aloe Blacc, Beat Konducta (AKA Madlib), Baron Zen, and Koushik. Once again Stone’s Throw have only themselves to rival when it comes to hip-hop compilations and 2K8: B-Ball Zombie War is yet another all-star performance from some of Stone’s Throws finest competitors.
