Micah P Hinson - All Dressed Up
- Author

It is a difficult thing – producing an album of covers that is more exercise in re-invention then self-indulgence. Unfortunately far too often covers are lesser reproductions of the original or, even worse, travesties. Micah P. Hinson’s latest album, ‘All Dressed Up and Smelling of Strangers’ (excellent title) is a two disc array of covers that manages to produce a range of outcomes. more »

Fyfe Dangerfield - Fly Yellow Moon
- Author
- Kalon Harrison
To be able to capture a moment in life, and describe it so poetically is a hard thing to do. Not for Fyfe Dangerfield. In his debut solo album, Fly Yellow Moon, Fyfe has created a shameless pop-soul sound that is as fresh as the morning sun. The allure to go mainstream might appeal to a lot of musicians venturing on a solo journey, but what separates Fyfe from many others is his ability to fashion a pop record without it sounding like it has been over produced and stripped of all of its raw emotion. Fly Yellow Moon captures that moment of lovestruck joy effortlessly. more »

Story of the Last 8 Years
US Post-hardcore outfit and long-stayers in the genre, Story of the Year, know how to make a record of catchy punk anthems. They’ve shown this yet again with their 4th Studio album The Constant. This is a record literally bleeding angsty, anthemic riffs and lyrical hooks designed to get your heart racing, however, whether it does this is debatable… more »

Retribution Gospel Choir - 2
- Author
- Uri Moline
Alan Sparhawk and Steve Garrington already stated with RGC’s first album on Mark Kozelek’s Caldo Verde label that this was no Low mark II. Gone were the ever so slow tunes, shimmering guitars and glacial melodies; in came the big riffs, arena inspired rock and soaring vocals, it was time to turn it up and get noisy. In this second album and first on Sub Pop, Retribution Gospel Choir –Low minus singer Mimi Parker plus drummer Eric Pollard– have expanded their sound and it feels bigger, catchier and rougher. 2 delivers a great balance of big classic rock tracks (Working Hard, White Wolf) reminiscent of Crazy Horse or even the E Street band, experimental pieces like Something’s Going To Break, short interludes and songs that would easily fit in a Low album if you could strip them down, like the epic blistering Electric Guitar or album closer Bless Us All. Clocking off at 33 minutes, 2 is up there with Alan Sparhawk’s best work and clearly not just a side project. Definitely one of those albums that keeps getting better and better the more you listen to it. Listen loud for better results. more »
