Rice Is Nice

I’ll have what Richard In Your Mind is having. The Sydney psychedelic pop band has released their second album My Volcano having teamed up with SPOD aka Brent Griffin who helped produce the album.

The tracks ‘Mongrowlia’, ‘Flower of the Heart’ and ‘Tiny Colossus Face’, all had identity crises, swapping genres back and forth. The 60s influence can be heard on the very trippy ‘Candelabra’ and on ‘Flower of the Heart’ both referencing the Beatles, with the latter adding a sitar, a harmonium and fantastically intense percussion at the end. ‘Losing Our Minds’ is comparatively simple with just guitar and percussion echoing 60s and 70s rock. Switch over to ‘Birds’ and SPOD is back with the synthesizer creating a rhythm wah like effect.

‘Edge Off Dreaming’ and ‘Lightning Eyes’ are the sorbets of the album—unassuming, plain but preparing you to be blown away by what comes next. ‘The Sun Broke Into Your Heart’ is poppy and catchy, keeping you on the edge as the music builds up to a crescendo and an expected percussion climax that never happens.

Standout tracks are ‘Losing Our Minds’, ‘Birds’, ‘Mongrowlia’, ‘Flower of the Heart’, and ‘The Sun Broke Into Your Heart’ which has the best lyrics by far: “And that was just the start of your adventure and I can’t even begin to imagine all of your destinations”.

It is clearly the start of Richard In Your Mind’s adventure and if you want to join in on the trip, go get the album.
