Burning guitars introduce you to this juggernaut of psych rock anthems, otherwise known as the album Paralyzed by Witch.
Witch are an outfit that could easily be written off as a J Mascis side project however, the promotional material that comes with it warns, quite convincingly, not to do this. Mascis may be behind the drum kit but this is no indie metal super-group exploring putting out a token record – Paralyzed is the second release from Witch and the follow-up to their 2006 debut.
You could call Witch stoner rock, but perhaps with more energy – riding the wave of psychedelic rock that is making a popular resurgence of late. However true to classic form, Paralyzed is a body of songs that sound as if they could have been released in the 70’s – this is no trashy modern day rehash. There are subtle shifts in tracks from the initial blistering onslaught, to more flowery psych-folk songs reminiscent of Dungen, to slower stoner ballads… but on the whole Paralyzed is unashamedly indulgent hard psych rock. Yeah.
